Riquewihr – A fairytale village in the east of France

The Alsace region is rich in many beauties, and it’s greatest treasure is beautiful, unreal, fairytale villages!

Riquewihr is known for the beauty of his houses, each with it’s own charm. •

After visiting Colmar and Strasbourg, my visit to Riquewihr came…

• map of Alsace

Riquewihr – a cute little town that actually consists of one street. With distinctive houses for the area, beautiful restaurants where you can taste the best tarte flambée, a cobblestone that takes you straight to the huge clock that will remind you of Walt Disney’s most beautiful cartoons, Riquewihr is one of Alsace’s most beautiful villages. You can also go for so-called wine tastings here, which are characteristic of the whole Alsace region.

• This watch is one of most important sights of Riquewihr, and can be found in Walt Disney’s cartoons. •

At the very entrance to this village, as soon as the big gate passes, you come across a countertop shop that produces the best macarons (those characteristic of Alsace, not Parisian). The owner will first of all offer you to try macarons of different flavors (coconut, orange…) and then you can choose your favorite ones and buy them. One bag costs 6€, and if you buy more bags, you get a discount. These macarons are characteristic of this area, so it may also be a good souvenir idea for you.

• This is how Alsatian macarons look, and they can have different flavors, such as coconut or orange. •

Souvenirs are expensive in the whole area, even more expensive than in the center of Paris. A lunch for two (tarte flambée + juice) will cost you around € 25 for two persons.

Riquewihr was originally the property of the Duke of Württemberg. Historically, this village served as a “wine village” as a trading hub for Alsatian and German wines.

Riquewihr is a popular tourist attraction primarily because of it’s historic architecture, and is known for riesling and other wines produced in this village.

• The architecture of these houses really leaves everyone speechless. •

Riquewihr today looks more or less like it was in the 16th century. It is located on the “wine route” and is located 11 km from Colmar.

Riquewihr is one of the few cities that did not suffer major damage during World War II. It is surrounded by medieval fortifications and overlooks a castle, dating from the same period, which was turned into a museum. If you have the opportunity, make sure to go for it!

• Behind us is a castle located in the immediate vicinity of Riquewihr, which, in some opinions, was the inspiration for Walt Disney for the castle in the cartoon “Beauty and the Beast”. We couldn’t climb up to the castle itself because it was raining a lot, but we passed you at least a small part of this unreal beauty. •
